“ And these signs shall follow those who believe.
In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues, they shall take up serpents and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. ”
Book of Marc 16:17-18
Exactly one century ago, George Hensley, an unemployed farm worker received a spiritual illumination by reading, maybe for the thousandth time in his life, the passage of the Book of Marc (16 :17-18).
All of a sudden, these words no longer sound as a simple promise. George Hensley is convinced of having received the divine gift to master death and to prove it to his contemporaries he will repeatedly and during 40 years of preaching in little churches from Kentucky to Florida, put his life in danger by handling poisonous rattle snakes. This way a kind of popular and typically american worship is created.
This is the story of Pastor Randy Wolford and his Brother Chris in the valley of Jolo, West Virginia ; one of the poorest states of America and the only one where snake handling is still legal.
